Ghana's heavy reliance on imported food has left it vulnerable to disruptions in global supply chains, as seen during the Russia-Ukraine war and recent onion shortages. With immense agricultural potential, Ghana must reduce dependence on imports and boost domestic production. This requires investing in irrigation, equipment, climate-smart practices, storage, roads and helping smallholder farmers access markets and financing. While government programs have helped, bolder strategies like input subsidies and guaranteed procurement are needed. With strategic policies and public-private partnerships, Ghana can optimize its agricultural sector to ensure national food security and prosperity.
